About This Place

Located in the heart of Newark, DE, Chef Tan offers an authentic and richly evocative Chinese dining experience that transports you straight to Sichuan and traditional home-cooked flavors. This restaurant specializes in genuine Chinese cuisine, boasting a menu filled with vibrant, aromatic dishes that promise a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

At Chef Tan, the spotlight falls brightly on their Home Cooking Dishes, where classics like the Twice Cooked Pork in Sichuan Style (J15) and Mapo Tofu (J17) bring an irresistibly spicy, numbing kick that gently commands your senses. The Preserved Pork with Leek (J11) offers a perfect balance of savory depth and fresh leek fragrance, while dishes like the Sauteed Pig’s Intestines with Hot Chili (J16) awaken your palate with bold, complex layers that true aficionados will adore.

The restaurant also shines in its selection of appetizers—each one a delicate harmony of texture and flavor. The Dandan Noodles (X1) deliver a fiery, nutty complexity, while the Steamed Stuffed Buns (X4) feature a comforting, tender bite bursting with savory goodness. For those who cherish the perfect crispy-chewy contrast, the Scallion Pancakes (X9) are a must-try—a golden, fragrant starter that lays the foundation for the meal.

Dessert reveals a softer, sweeter side of Chef Tan’s culinary artistry. Their Glutinous Rice Balls Soup (for two) brings warmth and subtle sweetness, closing your meal with a comforting and authentic touch that lingers long after your last bite.

The dining atmosphere here reflects the authenticity of the dishes—unpretentious, inviting, and warm. Whether you visit for a vibrant meal with friends or a quiet dinner craving bold flavors, the friendly and attentive service makes every visit feel like coming home. Patrons frequently praise the genuine approach in both food and hospitality; as one customer, Liana Cen, put it simply, "So delicious, I always go back to this resto. I will remember—thanks to the chef for making such great food."

Many diners have discovered a rare gem in Northern Delaware through Chef Tan’s menu—Dena Cornett expressed heartfelt satisfaction after sampling a variety of dishes like the spicy cumin lamb and General Tso chicken alongside delicate wontons in chili oil. The experience is a journey through Chinese culinary traditions that go far beyond the typical takeout fare found locally.

For those seeking truly authentic Chinese flavors with an emphasis on quality and depth, Chef Tan stands out as a culinary destination worth every dollar. While some find it a bit pricier, the premium ingredients and masterful execution justify the price. Patrick Geneva recommends the sour pickled spicy beef for spice lovers eager to venture into bolder territory.

Whether dining in or ordering takeout, the experience at Chef Tan is consistently rated exceptional. Ruth Barnet’s takeout experience confirmed that this is not your run-of-the-mill China town fare but a genuine taste of regional Chinese cuisine, including standouts like Beef Rice Noodles and Three Cup Chicken.

In essence, Chef Tan is more than just a restaurant—it is a gateway to authentic Chinese home cooking and Sichuan spice that delights and satisfies on every level. If you appreciate culinary craftsmanship and crave honest, adventurous flavors, Chef Tan in Newark is where your appetite’s journey must begin.

Absolutely a delicious place for authentic Chinese food. We went with a group of five and were able to taste many dishes, including spicy seaweed salad, scallion pancakes, spicy cumin lamb (our hands down favorite), chili chicken, short ribs, General Tso chicken, and lo mein. We departed well-sated and happy that we FINALLY found a great Chinese restaurant in Northern Delaware.

Ordered takeout through UberEats from Chef Tan and 10/10 would do it again! Finally an authentic Chinese takeout experience! None of your typical Americanized dishes to be found on the menu (which also tend to be quite delicious, but it's harder to find the authentic stuff around here so this was a gem)! We ordered Beef Rice Noodles, Beef Ribs with Black Pepper, 3 Cup Chicken, and the Dry Pepper Dish. We'd order them all again although our favorite was the Dry Pepper Dish. :)

Very impressed with this place, thoroughly enjoyed the food here. My waitress was such a pleasure, she didn't speak much English, but we communicated wonderfully, as the menu is full of pictures only, and I pointed and gestured my order, that was fun!

Great authentic Chinese food. Easily recommend. Can be a bit expensive, but the food is high quality. I recommend the sour pickled spicy beef dish if you wish for something very spicy!

Chef Tan restaurant on Main Street has been a consistent and delicious dining experience for me over the past year. I've ordered here at least twice a month, sometimes multiple times a week. I started ordering here because they offered chitlins, a Southern delicacy that is hard to find in my area. However, I quickly became hooked on their unique and flavorful menu offerings. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with friendly staff always ready to help with menu recommendations or any special requests. The menu is a fusion of various Asian and American cuisines, with dishes that are both classic and creative. If you're looking for some standout dishes at Chef Tan restaurant on Main Street, I highly recommend trying the sauteed pig intestines with hot chili and the sauteed string beans. The pig intestines are cooked to perfection, tender and packed with flavor, while the hot chili adds just the right amount of heat. The sauteed string beans are also a must-try, with a satisfying crunch and a savory, garlicky sauce. Another dish that I always make sure to order is the shrimp rice noodles, which are a delicious and filling option. The noodles are stir-fried with plump shrimp and mixed with vegetables, creating a satisfying balance of flavors and textures. For those who love tofu, I highly recommend the china tofu with pork belly, even though there is hardly any pork in this dish. The tofu is crispy on the outside and silky on the inside, and the savory sauce is the perfect accompaniment. If you're in the mood for some spicy appetizers, the wonton in chili is a must-try. These dumplings are filled with a flavorful meat mixture and served in a spicy sauce that will leave your taste buds tingling. Finally, I can't recommend the hot and sour gizzards enough. This dish has been the most frequent item on the menu I've ordered! The gizzards are cooked to perfection, with a tangy and spicy sauce that is addictive and satisfying. I've actually tried the same dish in Manhattan, but (surprisingly) it did NOT come close to the flavor of Chef Tan. Overall, Chef Tan restaurant on Main Street is a gem for anyone looking for unique and flavorful dishes. With a diverse menu and attention to detail in every dish, it's no wonder I keep coming back for more.

We ordered the Szechewan Wonton, Twice Cooked Fish and a custom made bowl. The Wonton wasn't quite expected but the other two dishes were both quite good. We asked for mild in the spiciness and they were just right. Very tasty.
